Finance, ICT - Uber Admits Sexual Abuse Problem
Uber released an internal review that revealed a widespread sexual assault problem - the company received 235 reports of a rape occurring during a ride in the United States last year.
The company received 5,981 allegations of serious sexual assault in the US over two years, according to a new report covering 2017 and 2018. The claims range from unwanted touching and kissing to rape.
"Each of those incidents represents an individual who has undergone a horrific trauma," said Tony West, Uber's chief legal officer in an interview with NBC News. "But I’m not surprised by those numbers. And I'm not surprised because sexual violence is just much more pervasive in society than I think most people realize.
We do four million rides a day. That's 45 trips per second," West said. "And when you're operating at that kind of scale, thankfully, 99.9 percent of those rides end with absolutely no safety incident whatsoever
