A major newspaper in America's largest city will on Friday's cover depict the current occupant of the White House as a pile of feces after Donald Trump made a vulgar racist comment about where people of color might want to immigrate to the US.  It's an unprecedented gutting of the dignity and credibility of the US presidency under Trump.

The New York Daily News has never pulled its punches when dealing with Trump as a fatmouthed New York City real estate developer or as a presidential candidate, and has stepped up its steetwise criticism with Trump in the White House.  It will describe Trump as "s**t for brains".

This is because of Trump's vile comments in a White House meeting on immigration attended by several members of Congress.  When one participant recommended restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and some African nations ravaged by war and natural disasters, Trump angrily replied:  "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"

Trump then wondered why the US doesn't try to lure more immigrants from Norway, whose Prime Minister Erna Solberg visited the White House earlier in the day.  The inference was clear to everyone in the room:  White people come from Norway, not Haiti or Africa.

Although par for the course in Trump's vulgar, dimwitted, and overtly racist style of management, the comment inspired disgust around the world.  Norway in no way took it as a complement.  "Trump calls Haiti and African countries 'shithole' countries to the face of members of Congress, and uses Norway to prove his racism," wrote Norwegian newspaper columnist Andreas Wiese.  "This incident," wrote veteran journalism Helge Ogrim, "further lowers the respect for his office and for the US abroad."

Haiti's government had summoned a United States official to explain Trump's remarks.

In the US, few bothered to feign any shred of respect now that Trump has debased the presidency.

"You're a joke.  Resign," tweeted California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, a telegenic Democrat frequently mentioned as a possible future presidential candidate.  "If it walks like a racist, talks like a racist, acts like a racist - it's most definitely a racist," he added with a CNN graphic listing just a sliver of past racist garbage that spewed from Trump's facial sphincter.

Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts tweeted: "America's president is a racist and this is the proof.  His hateful rhetoric has no place in the WhiteHouse.  Every single Republican must denounce these comments now."

"Once again, @POTUS has made a fool of himself & our nation on a worldwide stage," tweeted Rep. Bill Pascrell, Democrat of New Jersey, "What a national disgrace!"

"The (President's) comments are unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation's values," said Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love, whose parents came to the US from Haiti, said in a statement.  "This behavior is unacceptable from the leader of our nation."

Other Republicans tweeted their "disappointment", while some demanded an explanation from Trump.

Still others had to point out the role US imperialism has played in the countries that the orange clown insulted. "His vulgar racism is exceeded perhaps only by his ignorance," said Columbia University historian and noted author on immigration Mae M. Ngai.  "Countries like El Salvador and Haiti are in terrible condition in large part because of long histories of American support for right-wing dictatorships and crony capitalism.  And why would anyone in Norway give up their social benefits - universal health care on a single payer system, no college tuition, and the like - to come to the US, which has none of it?"
