A Vancouver, British Columbia grocery store got tired of customers failing to bring in their own shopping bags, so it came up with a what seemed like a brilliant incentive to make them remember.

East West Market ordered plastic shopping bags emblazoned with the logos: the "Colon Care Co-op", "Into The Weird Adult Video Emporium", and "Dr. Toews' Wart Ointment Wholesale."  Fake stores to be sure, and no one would want to be seen walking down the street carrying that sort of 'advertising', would they?

But it turned out, they did.  Hipsters began showing up in the market without their own sturdy, reusable plastic bags just to get the wacky bags with their cool, retro, and ironic bags with their over the top logos.

So, the experiment didn't do anything to reduce the voluminous amount of plastic on our rivers and streams, choking out wildlife and spreading out in the world's oceans.  This comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commenced action to ban some single-use plastics like straws, bags and cutlery by early 2021 to reduce non-recyclable waste and protect the world's oceans.

"To be honest, as a dad, it's tough trying to explain this to my kids. How do you explain dead whales washing up on beaches around the world, their stomachs jam-packed with plastic bags?" Trudeau said.  "As parents we're at a point when we take our kids to the beach and we have to search out a patch of sand that isn't littered with straws, Styrofoam or bottles.  That's a problem, one that we have to do something about."
