Malaysia’s military says troops hunted and killed 31 more Sulu Militants from the Philippines in overnight clashes in Eastern Sabah state.  Malaysia is demanding the foreign gunmen unconditionally surrender.

At least 52 militants and 8 police have been killed in clashes since the episode began a couple of weeks ago.

The gunmen are trying to assert an obscure territorial claim over the eastern part of Borneo that was once a part of the ancient Sultanate of Sulu, which hasn’t existed on maps since the mid-1800s.

Their leader is Jamalul Kiram III, one of many who claim to be the rightful Sultan of Sulu.  Malaysia is asking the Philippines to extradite Kiram to face charges.

Philippine and Malaysian navy ships are patrolling the waters to make sure no more militants from the southern Philippines attempt to go to Borneo to reinforce the Sulu.
