An amateur prospector in Western Australia made the find of a lifetime when he stumbled across a fist-sized nugget weighing in at 1.4 kilograms worth around AU$100,000.

"He walked into my shop and showed me the nugget in his hand with a big smile on (his) face," said Matt Cook, owner of Finders Keepers Gold Prospecting as quoted by Australia Mining.  "It's just a bit bigger than a packet of smokes, and the density of it was incredible, so heavy."

The anonymous prospector said that he was using a metal detector while wandering the saltbush flats in the Kalgoorlie region.

And although Mr. Cook describes it as "a monster", Australia has seen even bigger chunks of gold.  In November 2017, a Queenslander found a 41.2 ounce nugget beneath the brush outside Townsville.  Earlier, in August 2016, a prospector discovered a 145-ounce nugget in Victoria’s Golden Triangle.
