Authorities in Kyoto, Japan confirmed that the fire at the venerable Kyoto Animation First Studio that killed at least 33 people was intentionally set.  It's believed that the arsonist broke into the rather unremarkable building in the southern Fushimi district, spread petrol or some other flammable liquid, and yelled, "Die!" as he set the fire.  Police were seen yelling at a man believed to be the suspect outside Thursday's fire, asking him why he did it; the motive for this heinous crime could be released soon.  Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the incident was "too appalling for words" and offered condolences.

Kyoto Animation, known by the portmanteau "Kyo-Ani" in Japanese, is the first successful animation studios outside Tokyo and has produced a vast body of work that is beloved by Anime fans and casual viewers, seen on international streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu.  Even Apple CEO Tim Cook called the attack "devastating" and "a tragedy felt far beyond Japan".  Around 70 people were in the building during the fire, and at least 36 are in hospital - some in a critical condition.  Some workers are missing, including director Yasuhiro Takemoto who is behind several of the studio's most-successful titles.

Anyway..

Donald Trump claims he "felt a little bit badly about it", after his audience of red hats at a rally in South Carolina chanted, "Send her back," in response to the mention of US Representative Ilhan Omar - a Somalia refugee who came to the US as a child, did every thing right, and because a Congresswoman.  He also lied and said he tried to stop the audience, but a simple review of the video proves that never happened.  All this comes after Trump's racist tweets saying Ms. Omar and three other progressive female Representatives of color should "go back" to their birth countries (the other three women were born in the US).  Rep. Omar responded to Trump, "As much as he's spewing his fascist ideology on stage, telling US citizens to go back because they don't agree with his detrimental policies for our country, we tell people that here in the United States, dissent is patriotic."

The US military confirms that the USS Boxer warship in the Strait of Hormuz off Iran shot down a drone aircraft that came too close.  Officials did not say from where the aircraft originated, although Trump said it was Iran.  Separately, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had seized the Panamanian-flagged Riah tanker for allegedly smuggling one million liters of fuel in the Persian Gulf.  Tensions have been getting worse in the gulf region after Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) a year ago.

A judge denied bail for rich guy and child rapist and Trump associate Jeffrey Epstein.  The court sided with prosecutors who said agents unearthed a "pile of cash, diamonds" and "a passport from a foreign country" in a safe belonging to Epstein; prosecutors also alleged that Epstein traveled extensively on a passport with a fake name during the 1980s.  This comes a day after newly revealed video showed Epstein and Trump "rating" the women at a party during the 1990s.  Epstein claims he is not guilty of federal child trafficking charges.

British parliamentarians blocked the likely next Prime Minister Boris Johnson from suspending Parliament to force through No Deal Brexit in October.  Johnson threatened to do so if he becomes PM this month and the Parliament is still deadlocked on how to handle the UK's exit from the European Union.  Meanwhile, the UK Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) predicted economic chaos if a no-deal Brexit happens:  Public borrowing would be about 60 Billion Pounds (AU$106.4 Billion), about double of earlier estimates.
