Tensions are rising in Jerusalem before the US later today opens its embassy in the disputed city, claimed as a capital by both Israel and the Palestinians.  A US delegation including the orange clown Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has already arrived.  Israel has beefed up security with two extra brigades of troops along Gaza and one in the West Bank; an airstrike also took out what the military claims was a "terror tunnel" leading from Gaza into Israel.  The embassy opening coincides with the 70th anniversary of the founding of modern Israel; one Tuesday, Palestinians observe the anniversary of the "Nakba" ("Catastrophe") in memory of the more than 700,000 Palestinians who were either driven from, or fled, their homes during the Arab-Israeli war that accompanied the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo is ordering an investigation into the group blamed in Sunday's deadly church bombings in Surabaya.  Seven people died and several were injured.  The crime is even more heinous because the bombers were all members of one family, with the parents putting their young children up to becoming suicide bombers.  The father is identified as Dita Sopriyanto; he drove a van to the Indonesian Christian Church, dropped off wife and their nine- and twelve-year-old daughters who set off suicide devices.  The father drove to the Pentecost Central Church and blew himself up with the van.  Meanwhile, their two sons rode motorcycles to Santa Maria Catholic Church, where they also detonated suicide bombs.  Police General Tito Karnavian said the parents were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, a terrorist group that lends its support to the so-called Islamic State in Indonesia.

Paris police say the man who went on a knife attack in the Opera district over the weekend was a French citizen of Chechen origin.  Sources have told the BBC that Khamzat Asimov was on a watch list of people who could pose a threat to national security, and police are questioning his family and associates.  IS claimed responsibility for the attack.  He killed one person and injured four others before being shot down by ever-vigilant Paris cops.

Italy's anti-establishment Five Star Movement has nearly completed a deal with the far-right party known as The League, with the main sticking point being which party will get to claim the Prime Minister's gig.  Sunday was the deadline to break the stalemate after elections in March that reflected the public's lack of faith in the traditional Left and right parties.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the government to assume direct administration over North West province, where allegations of widespread corruption in local government have led to violent protests.  North West province Premier Supra Mahumapelo is a political ally of former President Jacob Zuma, who is facing prosecution for corruption.  Mahumapelo denies misusing state funds and has gone on leave, but is refusing to step down.
