The dam burst at a Brazilian mine co-owned by BHP Billiton and operated by its Samarco subsidiary is being linked to an increase in production, according to an investigation by the ABC.  A lethal torrent of orange-brown mining sludge poured fourth from the Fundao Dam in Minas Gerais state on 5 November 2015, killing at least 19 people and causing billions of dollars in damage and environmental problems.  Brazilian state police and prosecutors say the disaster was set in motion when Samarco ramped up production to offset the falling iron ore price; but instead of planning a new dam, Samarco sought a patchwork solution to the stressed existing dam.  The ABC reports the original designer believes the disaster could have been avoided.

At least 36 people are believed dead in an explosion in a coal mine in northern Russia.  This happened as crews were digging to rescue 26 miners who were trapped by earlier gas explosions on Thursday in the mine at Vorkuta - all of the missing are now presumed to be dead.  "In the underground space where the 26 miners were, there are high temperatures and no oxygen," Russia's Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said.  Rescue efforts have been halted.

Today's the day for Cardinal George Pell to give testimony about what he knew about clergy sex abuse that occurred on his watch.  The child abuse royal commission wants to know about:  The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne's response to sex assault complaints and allegations of child sexual abuse during Pell's time as an Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne; and the response to allegations of abuse by six Christian Brothers, all of whom worked in Ballarat, VIC.  Pell is in Rome and will testify via closed link.

Police outside Mumbai are trying to determine the motive of a man who drugged and killed 14 members of his family.  "The attacker, Hasnin Anwar Warekar, hung himself after slitting the throats of all other family members, including his parents," said police spokesman Gajanan Laxman Kabdule in Thane, outside the western metropolis.  Warekar apparently laced their food with sedatives, putting them to sleep before he went at them with a knife.  Only a sister survived the attack; the victims range in age from three months to 55 years.

Swiss voters rejected a plan to automatically expel foreigners who commit minor crimes, with 59 percent saying "no" to the far-right "Swiss People's Party" proposal.  Despite growing unease over immigration and a byzantine naturalization process that doesn't confer automatic citizenship to children of foreigners born on Swiss soil, the opposition prevailed with its argument that it would create a two-tiered justice system.  The high turn-out coupled with the result are a sign that at least this line of xenophobia has gone too far.

Orange clown and US Republican party presidential candidate Donald Trump is characteristically unrepentant after being punked by a gossip website into retweeting a quote from Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.  Gawker didn't even hide its intentions, naming the twitter account "@ilduce2016", referring to Mussolini's nickname, and continually pumped out phrases associated with Mussolini.  The tweet read, "It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep."  Confronted by NBC news, Trump replied:  "It got your attention, didn't it?"  Trump is also refusing to fully disassociate himself from the endorsement of a former Ku Klux Klan leader.
