Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam says a massive disturbance outside the Legislative Council is "unacceptable for any civilized societies" and accuses the opposition of forming "organised riots".  The clashes between thousands of protesters and cops is the latest dust up over a security bill that would allow police torture, arbitrary detentions, and forced confessions in mainland China.  As it was, cops unleashed all of the usual anti-riot stuff on the protesters, including rubber bullets and tear gas.  At least two people are in critical condition among the more than 60 injuries.  The massive demonstration has delayed passage of the bill, but Lam expects it to become law before the 20 June deadline.

Russian police detained at least 400 people at a big rally in support of journalist Ivan Golunov, who was freed from jail yesterday after authorities dropped flagrantly phony drug charges against him.  About 2,500 people rallied in Moscow to demand the ouster of the cops who initially arrested Mr. Golunov - and allegedly planted the drugs on him.  Among those detained was Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.  Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokotsev said officers who had taken part in Golunov's detention would be suspended during an investigation.

Security forces in Ghana rescued two Canadian women aged 19 and 20 years from a kidnapping ordeal.  Although some neighboring West African nations have a problem with kidnappings that have become a serious source of cash for criminal gangs and Jihadist groups, Ghana is relatively stable and such things occur very rarely.  Lauren Tilley and Bailey Chitty were volunteers for the Toronto-based Youth Challenge International, which says the women are unharmed and have been in touch with their families.

Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a missile attack on Saudi Arabia's Abha Airport, wounding at least 26 people including chcildren.  The Saudi-led and US-backed coalition that is fighting the Houthis in the Yemeni Proxy War says the attack is proof that the rebels had acquired sophisticated Iranian missile technology.

A court in Argentina sentenced the former public works secretary to six years in prison for stashing US$9 Million and 150,000 Euros in illegally gotten gains inside bags that were hidden in a convent.  Jose Lopez insists he did nothing wrong; a nun was acquitted of helping him.  The cash will be donated to a couple of children's hospitals.
