UK Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson is advising Australia to look out for "any form of malign intent" from China, as Beijing seeks to raise its profile in the world.  Mr. Williamson just wrapped up a two-day visit to Sydney and Canberra, solidifying the Anglophone World's view of defense:  "We've got to ensure that any form of malign intent is countered and we see increasing challenges - it's not just from China, it's from Russia, it's from Iran - and we've got to be constantly making sure that our security measures, our critical national infrastructure is protected," he told the ABC.  Williamson also confirmed that the Royal Navy's HMS Sutherland will sail from Oz on a "freedom of navigation"mission through international waters in the South China Sea where China gobbled up a bunch of reefs and islets for military bases, and claiming the region for Beijing.

The heads of South Africa's ruling party met late into Monday night on the fate of corruption-plagued President Jacob Zuma, who for some reason still has defenders.  The National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC) is expected to ask Zuma to resign after nine years of economic turmoil and rampant corruption.  Some observers believe Zuma is holding out for a deal to avoid prosecution.  ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has little patience left for Mr. Zuma, promising those who had stolen state assets would be brought to justice.  He also called on the ANC to return to the values of modern South Africa's founding father Nelson Mandela, known as "Mandiba":  "We must work together as Mandiba taught us to push back the frontiers of poverty, unemployment and inequality," Ramaphosa said.

The Smithsonian Museum's National Portrait Gallery unveiled the new paintings of for US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

The orange clown Donald Trump unveiled his (totally ghost-written) 2019 budget plan and it is thoroughly mean-spirited, destructive, and disgusting.  Increasing the US budget deficit by US$7.1 TRILLION over the next decade, it calls for massive spending on defense.  At the same time, it cuts the Environmental Protection Agency budget by a third, eliminating all clime change research; slashes healthcare spending by $675 Billion, gutting Medicaid for low income Americans and repealing the Affordable Care Act; virtually eliminates funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and public television.  And of course, it contains tons of money for Trump's idiotic border wall which he promised Mexico would pay for.  With this plan, which has no chance of being passed as written, Trump has formally declared he cares nothing for the health of working families, communities, ocean shores, rivers, public lands, or keeping toxics away from kids and out of the air and water.

Israeli police have arrested former Melbourne school principal Malka Leifer, accusing her of faking mental illness to avoid extradition back to Australia where she is wanted on child molestation charges.  Prosecutors here accuse her of 74 instances of child abuse while she was principal of the ultra-orthodox Adass Israel girls school.  Israeli cops they will now work on sending her back to Melbourne.

A US drone strike killed a senior Pakistani Taliban leader last week, the militant group has admitted.  Khalid Mehsud was the deputy leader of the banned Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the main faction of the hardline Pakistani Taliban (which is separate from the Afghanistan Taliban).  Mehsud's faction was responsible for dozens of recent suicide bombings and attacks, as well as killing nine people in a siege at a college last year.

The British charity Oxfam's deputy chief executive has stood down over the handling of a scandal involving aid workers and prostitutes while delivering aid in Haiti in 2011.  Penny Lawrence said she was "ashamed" and takes full responsibility, while chief executive Mark Goldring thanked her for her decade of service.  Oxfam denies covering up the scandal, which blasted across the headlines in London over the weekend.

A security camera caught the exact moment of the plane crash that killed 71 people outside Moscow.  Russian television used a drone to capture the effort it takes to investigate a major plane crash in a frozen, snowy field out in the sticks.

The strange tale of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has him deported out of Ukraine - which granted and later revoked citizenship - and dumped in Poland - the previous country on his weird life journey.  Saakashvili and supporters say Ukraine cops "kidnapped" him out of a Kiev restaurant and sent him over the border.  Previous deportation attempts have seen him running across Kiev rooftops to try and escape.  He's still wanted on corruption charges back in Georgia, which he claims are politically motivated.

A suspected big cat poacher met his end at the jaws of lions, near South Africa's Kruger National Park.  "They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains," said Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe.  His loaded rifle and ammunition were found near the remains.  Authorities have been fighting a rise in lion poaching around Limpopo in recent years, fueled by demand in Southeast Asia where lion bones are used as a substitute for tiger bones in useless and environmentally destructive "traditional" medicine.
