The young Saudi woman who barricaded herself in a Thai hotel room rather than be sent back to her family is now in the care of the United Nations Refugee Agency.  18-year old Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun escaped during a family outing to Kuwait - She now wants to seek asylum here in Australia.  And she says her family will kill her because she has renounced Islam:  "My brothers and family and the Saudi embassy will be waiting for me in Kuwait," Ms. Mohammed al-Qunun pleaded, "My life is in danger.  My family threatens to kill me for the most trivial things."  Human Rights advocates were afraid that Thailand was working to repatriate her, but immigration police Surachate Hakparn says, "Thailand is a land of smiles.  We will not send anyone to die."

Donald Trump will deliver his first prime time televised address to the American public on Tuesday night (local time), and there is speculation that he will attempt to declare a national emergency in order to push ahead his ridiculous idea for a border wall along the frontier with Mexico.  Trump wants US$5.6 Billion to start the wall - which he promised Mexico would pay for during his 2016 campaign - and he has refused to sign a government funding bill until he gets it.  At the same time he has been unable to convince Americans of a need for a border wall, especially since cross border undocumented immigration is way down in recent years and most undocumented immigrants arrive via US airports.  If he declares a national emergency, it will throw the country into chaos as America is thrown into yet another manufactured crisis and set off a series of court battles challenging him to prove there is an emergency.

Jim Young Kim is resigning as president of the World Bank effective 1 February, an announcement that came as a shock and could set off some tussling over who will be the next president.  Kim emailed World Bank Staff that the "opportunity to join the private sector was unexpected, but I've concluded that this is the path through which I will be able to make the largest impact on major global issues like climate change and the infrastructure deficit in emerging markets".  Generally, the post-World War II arrangement has been that an American would run the World Bank while European heads the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Kim was then-President Obama's nominee.  Kim's term was to run through 2022, and insists he wasn't pushed to resign despite reports that he frequently clashed with the Trump administration.  Trump will have significant influence on picking his replacement. A US Navy ship sailed within twelve nautical miles of the Paracel Island chain "to challenge excessive maritime claims", according to a US Navy spokeswoman.  China claims practically all of the South China Sea - despite the fact that most of it lies way beyond its internationally-recognized maritime boundaries - and built a series of military bases on reclaimed islets and rocks.  "We urge the United States to immediately cease this kind of provocation," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang.

A military coup attempt in the west African nation of Gabon has failed.  President Ali Bongo is recuperating from a stroke out of the country since October, but his office says the situation is "under control".  Two junior officers who seized power for a few minutes before getting killed said they did it to "restore democracy" to the country, which has been ruled by the Bongo family for five decades.  Gabon is a minor oil producer and OPEC member.

A robber in Rio De Janeiro waited outside a young woman's apartment and when she walked outside, threatened her with a weapon to attempt to steal her mobile phone.  Unfortunately for him, it was UFC mixed martial arts fighter Polyana Viana and she proceeded to rearrange his face, which UFC showman Dana White showed in a world-wide social media post.
