The gunman who killed four men and wounded a woman before being arrested by police in Darwin, NT last night was a parolee wearing a monitoring device on his ankle.  The 45-year old is currently being held in Royal Darwin hospital after last night's dramatic arrest which was caught on video.   Witnesses said earlier than man went shooting room to room at the Palms Motel near the CBD; police are looking at at least five different crime scenes.  "This is not the Darwin we know," said NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner, "On behalf of Territorians, our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims and everybody else who has been impacted."  Authorities ruled out terrorism as a motive early on on.

Sudan pro-democracy protesters say the death toll is now at least 40 after the military attacked a sit-in protest.  At least 30 died on Monday when troops first attacked the protest camp, setting peoples tents aflame as the protesters sat inside.  The Sudan Doctors' Committee said the exact number of those been killed across the country is still unknown because of the chaotic nature of what is unfolding.  The military has been loathe to give up power since president Omar al-Bashir fled the country in the face of growing pro-democracy demonstrations in April.  

Tens of thousands gathered for solemn vigils to mark the Tiananmen Square massacre in the only places in China where it is safe for them to do so, Hong Kong and Macau.  Most of the rest of China bans the mention of the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing.

Where else are there giant rallies?  How about the Czech Republic, where tens of thousands want Prime Minister Andrej Babis to step down over allegations his private companies are wrongly receiving European Union subsidies.  Around 120,000 crowded the streets of the capital Prague in the biggest anti-government demonstrations since the fall of Communism.  

Donald Trump claimed he couldn't see the protesters in London, even though his motorcade drive right by the famous "Trump baby" balloon, which depicts the current White House occupant as a big, orange, diapered man-baby.  Although there was pretty much no way he couldn't have seen at least some protests, expectations of 250,000 on the streets of London were overblown.

The last known survivor of the Sobibor uprising in World War II, Semion Rosenfeld, is dead in Israel at age 96.  The Ukrainian Red Army soldier was part of a mass resistance and escape of 300 inmates from the nazi death camp in occupied Poland.  Only 47 of them survived the rest of the war - but once Rosenfeld was free, he went back to killing nazis.  The head of Israel's Jewish Agency Isaac Herzog said Rosenfeld was a true "hero".

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has dropped gender-specific school uniforms for students, meaning that girls can wear pants and boys can wear skirts.  Trans-rights campaigners lauded the decision.  It's not the first time Mexico has led the way; the capital's ban on circus animal acts spread to most other areas around the country, as did issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
