Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat says he will step down in the new year in the political crisis over the car-bombing murder of an investigative journalist.  But rather than call an election, Muscat is asking his ruling party to choose a successor after 12 January.  Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia's work exposed official corruption on the Mediterranean Island, and she linked local corruption to the Panama Papers Scandal, which detailed how the world's wealthiest hide their money to avoid paying taxes.  She started her car for the last time in October of 2017.  Over the weekend, Maltese prosecutors announced charges against a gambling and real estate tycoon in the plot.

There is outrage in Hyderabad, India after the rape and murder of a woman whose charred body was found underneath a highway flyover.  Four men are under arrest, but large protests broke out when the family said the police didn't take their concerns very seriously, even suggesting that the victim - a local veterinarian - "eloped" while she was missing and before the body was found.  The situation recalls the rape and murder of a 2012 rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in Delhi, which started the conversation about the epidemic of violence against women in India - but the victims' family says the police haven't gotten the message.

UK authorities identified the second victim of the London Bridge terrorist attack last week.  23-year-old Saskia Jones was a Cambridge graduate and had been working as a volunteer as part of the "Learning Together" prisoner rehabilitation program - just like the other person killed, 25-year old Jack Merritt.  Saskia's family described her as a "funny, kind, positive influence at the center of many people's lives".  The two were at an event to mark the fifth anniversary of the program at the Fishmongers' Hall in the center of London when one of the attendees - convicted terrorist Usman Khan - pulled out a knife and began attacking people, prompting civilians to fight back and police to shoot him.
