The European Union has given an ultimatum to Greece to strengthen its borders, or face suspension from the Schengen Zone.  More than 850,000 refugees and migrants entered Europe via Greece last year, and another 77,000+ have since the beginning of the year.  This is all while Greece is struggling with its own economic crisis brought about by predatory debt to Europe.  The European Council is demanding that Athens increase registration procedures, sea border surveillance, border check procedures, risk analyses, human resources and training, infrastructure, and equipment and international cooperation (without suggesting how the debt ridden country might PAY for it).

The UN hopes to roll out another aid convoy to besieged areas of Syria as early as today, now that the US and Russia have announced a cease-fire deal involving their proxies.  Both rebel groups and Syrian government forces have employed siege tactics on civilian populations to starve out opponents, real and perceived. 

Turkish forces are accused of a mass killing in the Kurdish southeast.  This allegedly happened on Sunday, 7 February when Turkish forces fighting alleged insurgents in the city of Cizre entered a basement where as many as 60 civilians were sheltering.  "They committed a massacre but they cannot announce it," accuses Selahattin Demirtas, the leader of the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP).  Since the day of the incident, the government has been slowly upping the official death toll.  "They are scattering the dead bodies into side streets and ruined houses as if the dead bodies were already there," Demirtas added. 

Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill have met in Havana, Cuba.  It's the first meeting leaders of their respective religions have had since the Pope Leo IX and Patriarch Cerularius mutually excommunicated each other in the year 1054.  But the two have found a common cause to call for "christian unity" and urged the world to protect Christians from persecution in the Islamic World:  They released a mutual declaration saying Christians in many parts of the Middle East and North Africa "are being completely exterminated" while "their churches are being barbarously ravaged and looted, their sacred objects profaned, their monuments destroyed".

Venezuela's conservative congress is speeding up efforts to oust democratically-elected President Nicolas Maduro,after a bruising defeat at the Supreme Court.  Justices overruled congress and gave Maduro sweeping emergency powers to deal with the horrible economy.  Parliament speaker Henry Ramos Allup said proposals to unseat Mr. Maduro will now be presented in a matter of days, rather than months.  Venezuela's constitution says a recall effort canbegin three years after the start of a president's term, which would be April of this year.

A woman and her baby daughter are reportedly okay after being rescued from their car, which overshot a parking space and wound up in a canal in Amsterdam.

Human Rights Watch is among the groups calling on Indonesian President Joko Widodo to protect the rights and safety of LGBT people, after his government told social media and messaging services to ban same sex emojis.  Apps like LINE, Whatsapp, Facebook, and Tinder have such enojis ofsame sex couples holding hands, and many smart phones have them built-in.  "Those things might be considered normal in some Western countries, while in Indonesia it's practically impossible," said a spokesman for the Communication and Information Ministry.  HRW says it's another step in a troubling series of anti-LGBT actions under Jokowi's administration.
