Maine US Senator Susan Collins used a lengthy Senate floor speech to bash the supporters of the women who accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and announce she would support Donald Trump's pick for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the world's most powerful nation.  After that dramatic show, conservative West Virginia "Democrat" Sen. Joe Manchin announced he, too, would support Kavanaugh before he slinked past a group of angry Women's Rights protesters for the exit.  They were the last two "undecided" senators on whose vote the nomination would sink or swim.  Three women accused Kavanaugh of sexual impropriety when he was a student at an expensive prep school and at Yale in the 1980s; attempted rape, sexual abuse, and facilitating gang rapes by providing drugs and alcohol to women at parties.  He denied the allegations.  The final confirmation vote is on Saturday in the US, and the outcome is now all but assured.

The head of Interpol is missing.  Meng Hongwei is a Chinese national who was elected head of Interpol in 2016.  He traveled to China at the end of September and has not been heard from since.  A source told the South China Morning Post that the 64-year old Mr. Meng was "taken away" for questioning by China's "discipline authorities.  Beijing has not said why this is happening or where he's being held, but Meng apparently has associations with rivals of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has cracked down hard on opponents under the guise of fighting "corruption".

German authorities are imploring people who visited a famous Berlin sex club last weekend to seek medical attention:  A man who attended a fetish party at the KitKatclub, a place where apparently anything goes, was diagnosed with life-threatening Neisseria meningidis and is in a serious condition.  He's being treated with antibiotics, as are around 100 other people as a precaution.

Ireland's parliament has its first bill to fully legalize abortion rights after the landmark referendum in May that repealed the constitutional ban.  The Regulation of the Termination of Pregnancy would allow women to have abortions up to the 12th week of pregnancy.  Abortions would also be available beyond 12 weeks in cases where the fetus is not expected to survive or the mother's health is at risk.  Ireland's health minister Simon Harris said the bill marks a new beginning for women's health: "I am determined that today, now, we begin a new chapter on women’s health.  A chapter in which women are valued, their decisions are respected, and they are cared for without judgment."

Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty in the shooting death of 16-year old Laquan McDonald, yet another racially-charged case of a white cop killing a black kid in the US.  Police squad car video - which Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel tried to block from being released - showed Van Dyke arriving at a crime scene involving McDonald and instantly drawing his weapon and firing 16 shots into the teen as he walked away from police.  Although the guilty verdict diffused tensions in the city, there was an impromptu march downtown to decry police violence.

South Korea's former President Lee Myung-bak has been sentenced to 15-years in prison and fined around US$1.5 Million for corruption and bribery.  He is the fourth former president of South Korean to land in prison.
