Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi says the war against the so-called Islamic State is over and Iraqi troops are in complete control of the border with Syria, where Russia claims to have routed IS two days earlier.  The extremist group seized large swathes of Iraqi and Syria in 2014 - attracting jihadist fighters from around the globe to join its cause, committing uncounted human rights abuses all along.  If IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still alive, he is believed to be hiding out somewhere in the border area.

Palestinian protests against Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel were somewhat smaller on Saturday, although just as intense.  Rocks and petrol bombs, tear gas and rubber bullets.  Israel's rocket attack on Gaza a day earlier killed two people and injured dozens.

Arab foreign ministers blasted Trump at the Arab League emergency summit in the Egyptian capital, with all agreeing Trump's decision has robbed Washington of its credentials as an honest broker in Mideast peace.  "The decision amounts to the legalization of occupation," said the head of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, as he called on world nations to recognize the State of Palestine with east Jerusalem as its capital.  US Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to travel to Egypt later this month, but he will not find too many open doors:  The heads of the largest Christian church and a top Sunni Muslim organization announced they would not meet with Pence.

Honduras main opposition leader Salvador Nasralla is formally requested the results of the botched 26 November election be annulled, describing the vote count's numerous irregularities as a "scandalous fraud".  The "official" count says Nasralla trails conservative incumbent Juan Orlando Hernandez by 1.6 percentage points, but that was only after several days had passed since election authorities said Nasralla was ahead by five points.  The second opposition party also filed a demand for an annulment, and says the entire process was tainted because Honduran presidents are legally barred from serving consecutive terms:  "There have been violations since the president of the republic was allowed to participate in the electoral process when the constitution prohibited it," Octavio Pineda said.

Uber has settled a lawsuit brought by the Indian woman whose medical records were accessed by the ride-hailing company when she complained she was raped by an Uber driver.  The Delhi woman later moved to Texas, and sued when it came out that Uber executives obtained her medical records to possibly discredit her story.  The executives have since been sacked, and the rapist back in India was sentenced to life in prison.

An alliance of two Communist parties appears to be on track to form Nepal's next government in that country's parliamentary election.  The Maoist and Marxist-Leninist factions are promising five years of stability until the next election, which is welcomed by the Nepalis who missed out on decades of sorely-needed infrastructure upgrades due to political infighting and civil unrest:  "Now that there is likely to be a strong government, I am hopeful there will be development of the country," said businessman Susil Sah.

Italy's governing Democratic Party and antifascists rallied in the northern resort town of Lake Como to warn about the threat of fascism making a comeback.  Fascist scum had earlier barged into a meeting about refugee housing and railed about the perceived but non-existent "invasion" of foreigners.  Como authorities refused to allow fascist scum to hold a counter demonstration, and so they held a pity party at a hotel to complain everyone's picking on them, for being racist trash.  Oh well, it could be worse:  Just look at the last time Italy had to deal with its fascism problem.
Bye bye, Benito
Italy's post-World War II constitution specifically outlaws the return of fascist organizations.
