Japanese prosecutors indicted three former executives with Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) for allegedly failing to take measures to prevent the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.  It's been almost five years since the complex was struck by enormous tsunami waves which knocked out the cooling systems, leading to three reactors melting down and through the floors of the buildings.  75-year old former chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata, plus former vice presidents Sakae Muto and Ichiro Takekuro - both in their late 60s - are charged with professional negligence that resulted in death and injury.

Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar after six nominations.  Leo won the statue for Best Actor for the movie "The Revenant"; Brie Larson named Best Actress Oscar for "Room"; Best Picture went to "Spotlight", about the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal; And "Mad Max: Fury Road" astonished, picking up six Oscars - the most awards of the night.  Host Chris Rock playfully lambasted Hollywood for its diversity problem.

North Korea displayed a US student on state run media, where an emotional Otto Warmbier confessed to attempting to steal a piece of propaganda to bring back home as a "trophy".  The 21-year old was apparently part of a tour group that visited North Korea last month, when he was arrested.  It's not clear if the confession will clear up his problems in Pyongyang; but in the past, North Korea has released Western prisoners after they made confessions for state media.

Cardinal George Pell says the Catholic Church has made "enormous mistakes" in dealing with claims of sexual abuse.  "I'm not here to defend the indefensible," said Cardinal Pell in Rome, over a videolink to the royal commission on child abuse in Sydney.  Cardinal Pell is not accused of sexual abuse, but he denies knowledge of pedophile priests who preyed upon child in the Ballarat diocese during his time there as a priest in the 1970s and 1980s.
