Venezuela's Supreme Court has declared the new conservative-controlled congress null - unless it unseats three deputies whose elections are being contested by the former majority Socialist Party of President Nicolas Maduro.  Until that happens, nothing it does counts.  The conservatives last week took power, swearing on the three from Amazonas State despite the challenges to their elections.  Without the three, the conservatives do not have the coveted super-majority needed to overturn 17 years of Hugo Chavez' and Nicolas Maduro's policies.  "If the National Assembly is in contempt, nobody is going to recognize it," said Socialist Party deputy leader and former National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello.

Around 400 people urgently need to be evacuated from the rebel-held Syrian town of Madaya.  "They need medical evacuation on an urgent basis tonight and they want permission from the government of Syria to lift those people out," said New Zealand's Ambassador to the UN Gerard van Bohemen after a Security Council discussion on the Syrian crisis.  Word of the medical emergencies came after a UN aid convoy finally got into Madaya to help starving residents.

A helicopter pilot injured in Antarctica might be flown back to Australia for treatment.  He was delivering fuel drums to the remote West Ice Shelf, but walked away from his aircraft and fell 20 meters down a crevasse.  And then he was stuck down there for two or three hours while the second pilot flew back to Davis Station to get help.  The pilot is reportedly receiving the "best possible care" at the station's medical facility.

China has sentenced former vice minister of public security Li Dongsheng to 15 years in prison for for accepting bribes.  Mr. Li's is the latest head to role in President Xi Jinping's crackdown on corruption, which has already claimed several top government and Communist Party officials all the way up to the Politburo.  Most appear to be from rival factions from President Xi.

China's Dalian Wanda Group will buy controlling interest in Legendary Pictures for US$3.5 Billion.  Legendary is the Hollywood studio responsible for Jurassic World, the Dark Knight Batman trilogy, and the Western version of Godzilla.  Its films have grossed more than US$12 Billion globally.

Rupert Murdoch has announced his engagement to former model Jerry Hall, who is totally into him for his rugged good lucks and charming personality.  She's 59-years old, and he remembers when the Ark of the Covenent was lost to Babylon.  Murdoch has six children from his three previous marriages, and Hall has four from her relationship with Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger.

Former Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is appealing his murder conviction and sentencing to South Africa's Constitutional Court.  It's his last chance to try and reduce a likely 15-year prison term, minus time already served for his conviction on a lesser charge.  At first, a court found him guilty of culpable homicide in the shooting death of his partner Reeva Steenkamp, which he claimed was an accident.  Prosecutors successfully appealed and the conviction was upgraded to murder.  Pistorius served less than a year in prison and is free on bond pending re-sentencing.

The Afghanistan Taliban is releasing a Canadian man held prisoner since 2010.  The terrorist group released a video of Colin Rutherford in 2011, accusing the then-26-year old of being a spy.  Rutherford denies it and says he went to Afghanistan as a tourist to look at old shrines.  It's not clear how the agreement to release Rutherford came about, but Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion thanked the government of Qatar while making the announcement.
