Everything cold is new again!  As in “Cold War”.  Russia says it is sending nuclear-armed submarines back into the Southern waters surrounding Antarctica and Australia.  That would end a hiatus of more than 20 years following the break-up of the Soviet Union.

The state-run Itar-Tass news agency quoted a General saying, “The revival of nuclear submarine patrols will allow us to fulfill the tasks of strategic deterrence not only across the North Pole but also the South Pole.”

Earlier this year, Russia launched the “Yuri Dolgurky”, a Borei class submarine capable of carrying 16 long-range nuclear missiles.  Moscow hopes to have seven more in the oceans before 2020.

Despite the “New START” treaty that lowers limits on the size of their long-range nuclear arsenals, the US and Russia still have more than enough nukes to blow up the world.  And Vladimir Putin has made it clear that despite technical setbacks, Russia will continue to upgrade its nuclear arsenal.

Here's a playlist to get you in the mood for the resumption of the Cold War!  You young folks didn't know what you were missing!
