The BBC is accusing the Turkish government of waging a campaign of intimidation against its journalists.

It started on Sunday, when Ankara Mayor Ibrahim Melih Gokcek described BBC Turkish reporter Selin Girit as an “English agent”.  Gokcek is a member of the ruling AK party of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the object of the protesters ire.

Gokcek incited his followers to go on to the social media Twitter to denounce the BBC journalist by sending tweets to the newly created hashtag, which could be roughly translated as "Don't be an agent on behalf of England, Selin Girit".

It became one of the most popular Twitter topics in Turkey, but was quickly overtaken by angered Turks who made the phrase “Melih Gokcek is a provocateur” the country’s number one trending hashtag.
