Assassins in Islamabad have himself gunned down Pakistan’s main prosecutor in the murder of Benizir Bhutto. The attack happened in broad daylight in a busy street in a middle class neighborhood.

Police say gunman on motorcycles ambushed Special Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, shooting him multiple times in the chest on Friday as he was driving to the next hearing in the murder case of the former prime minister.  Ali’s body guard was injured but is reportedly out of danger; a female pedestrian was killed when their car crashed.

Ali was also the lead prosecutor against a number of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) defendants being tried in Pakistan for their role in the Mumbai, India bombings of 2008.  Critics over the years have accused Pakistan’s intelligence agency of helping and protecting LeT.

Benizir Bhutto was murdered in 2007 in a gun and bomb attack.  Prosecutors and Bhutto’s son have accused former military ruler Pervez Musharraf of orchestrating her murder.  He is currently under house arrest.
