Former Foreign Minister and Liberal Party deputy leader Julie Bishop has landed at Australian National University (ANU), six months after leaving federal politics.

Ms. Bishop will be the next chancellor of ANU, replacing Gareth Evans - himself, a former Foreign Minister - who is stepping aside next year.  Bishop will be the first woman to get the top job in the school's 60-year history.

"It is a great honour to rake up the role of chancellor of Australian National University," she said in a recorded statement,  "ANU's strong links globally, and in our region, make it one of Australia's most important institutions, and I look forward to working with it as we continue to support and further our national interest."

She represented the Division of Curtin constituency in Western Australia from 1998 until May of this year, serving in a variety of roles such as:  Minister for Aging; Minister for Women; Minister for Education and Science; Deputy Opposition Leader; Deputy Leader for the Liberal Party, and Foreign Minister.

Despite her experience and impressive resume, she wound up on the wrong side of the Liberal leadership fight against Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton.
