The president of the prestigious University of Southern California C.L Max Nikias has agreed to step down in the scandal involving a university gynecologist who may have abused hundreds of patients.

Thousands of students and alumni signed an online petition demanding Nikias' resignation for allegedly failing to act on the complaints about Dr. George Tyndall, who had worked at a university clinic for decades.  Over the years, more than 300 women complained to the university accusing Tyndall of performing unwanted pelvic exams, fondling their breasts, and telling off-color and racists jokes.

Tyndall was fired last year, but university officials did not report him to law enforcement or state medical authorities at the time.  The school has set up a resource page for concerned students and instructions to share information about Tyndall.  "We pledge to handle your outreach with compassion and sensitivity," it says.

A faculty organization also called for Nikias to resign, and at least seven women have filed lawsuits.
