The world's largest working offshore wind farm just opened off the UK coast, able to generate enough electricity to power 600,000 homes.

The Walney facility, about 19 kilometers off Cumbria in the Irish Sea, already had already had 102 turbines before another 87 were added earlier this year.  Each turbine stands 190 meters tall - twice the height of Big Ben's belltower at Parliament.  Altogether, they can generate 659 megawatts.

"Record-breaking engineering landmarks like this help us consolidate our global leadership position, break records for generating renewable energy, and create thousands of high quality jobs," said Energy Minister Claire Perry.  Operating and maintaining the windfarm will create 250 jobs.

Prior to Danish owner Orsted's completion of the Walney extension, the world's largest offshore wind farm was still British - the London Array, in the Thames Estuary, is now in second place.
