South Australia formally switched on the world's largest lithium ion battery.  The project is designed to solve the state's problems with its energy demand.

"South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy, delivered to homes and businesses 24/7," said Premier Jay Weatherill.  "I want to express my gratitude to the workers who have constructed this battery, they have every right to be proud of what they have constructed."

Although the official ceremony was on Friday, the 100-megawatt battery built by Tesla near Jamestown was already putting power into the state grid since Thursday night, due to the increased demand when the temperature topped 30 C degrees.  Tesla's battery is capable of powering 30,000 homes for up to an hour, but will more often be used to to support and stabilize existing electricity supplies.
