The Western Australian chemical company Coogie is planning the country's only methanol plant for Darwin Habour, a project that is projected to cost $500 Million and could begin operating by 2024.

Coogie says that the facility wouldn't use any gas from the Northern Territory's fracking industry.

"We're not even factoring in onshore developments for this project," said Coogee chief executive Grant Lukey.  "We don't need it at all.  What we have discussed is offshore conventional gas."

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner a new methanol plant would generate more than 1,000 new jobs during construction and a "further 350 direct and indirect jobs during operations".
