Authorities in Tasmania closed the beach at Coles bay, a popular spot for holiday makers, after tests discovered unacceptable levels of sewage in the water.  It's not clear when the beach will be reopened, but the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council hopes it will happen within a few days.

Testing earlier on Tuesday discovered evidence of effluent in the water off Muirs Beach.  Mayor Michael Kent suspects thatdamaged sewage pipes might be the cause.

"The pipes have been uplifted by the flood and they've just cracked, broken, moved by the flood," he told the ABC.  "If that's the case they'll have to be replaced and repaired.  Our environmental man is back there today doing further tests which will go to the health department."

Local officials are keen to reopen the beach almost 200 kilometers northeast of Hobart to tourists, but it will depend on the water.  Mayor Kent says further tests "will go to the health department and in all probability they'll give us the all clear".  But if the health department says the beach must remain closed, "that's what we'll do."
