Brazilian authorities arrested two executives and six other employees of mining giant Vale SA, owner of the iron mine where a dam collapsed and killed more than 160 people last month.

All eight were responsible for ensuring the strength and stability of the Brumadinho dam.  In addition to the arrests, cops carried out at least 14 search warrants.  The actions targeted Vale and a German auditing firm, TUV SUD, which Vale had contracted to certify that the dam was stable.  Five more were arrested last month, including three engineers on the project.

There are still many people missing and the death toll will likely go north of 300 lives lost before it is over.  Vale says it is cooperating with the investigation.
