Fed up with what she calls the Liberal's "cultural and gender bias, bullying and intimidation" of women in politics, MP Julia Banks says she will not contest her marginal seat in the next election.

"I have always listened to the people who elected me and put Australia's national interest before internal political games," Ms. Banks wrote in a statement blaming the forces behind the leadership spill.  "Last week's events were the last straw."

Statement

Conservatives gathering signatures to force a party room vote on Turnbull's leadership were accused of intimidating several women MPs and senators to support their push.

"The people of Chisholm know that I say what I think.  They know that I will always call out bad behaviour and will not tolerate any form of bullying or intimidation," she said.  "I have experienced this both from within my own party and from the Labor Party."

Her decision not to contest the seat in Chisholm, VIC could represent an opportunity for Labor to retake the seat it held for 18 years.  Ms. Banks won the constituency in the 2016 election with a wafer-thin margin of 1.24 percent - her statement noted she was elected "under the leadership of Malcolm Turnbull".
