Federal Government - Malcolm's New Ministers Sworn In
18 February 2016
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's second fresh-look ministry has been sworn-in at government house in Canberra. It's Malcolm's third such ceremony since replacing Tony Abbott as PM five months ago.
The ceremony sealed the unlikely political marriage of Malcolm and his new Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce, who quipped, "Never have daughters mate," when the Joyce brood was late in arriving.
Six ministers left the old ministry via retirement, sacking, or scandal. Jamie Briggs stepped down (although he didn't land on a table topped with expensive Italian marble this time) from the Ministry for Cities and the Built Environment after an incident with a female DFAT employee in a bar in Hong Kong; former special minister of state Mal Brough stepped down amid a police investigation; Stuart Robert stood down after being found to have breached ministerial standards on a private China trip in 2014.
Most reporters wound up talking about Bibles after the ceremony; Senator James McGrath brought his own holy book, but new Vocational Education and Training Minister Scott Ryan's was bigger. Originally purchased by his great-great Grandmother 130 years ago, Mr. Ryan had to tuck the giant book under his arm. He got it from his 98-year old Grandmother and has used the family heirloom in taking his previous oaths.
