About 330,000 Holden cars in Australia will be recalled because of the potentially deadly problems with their Takata air bags.

Earlier this week, the federal government said it will order mandatory recalls because some of the bags have exploded, propelling shrapnel into the faces and chests of drivers.  Holden equipped many of its cars with Takata air bags, although it didn't use the type of bag that is most at risk of malfunctioning.

The model years go as far back as 2005.  In addition to Holden, the recall will include cars from two other General Motors (GM) badges that are sold in Australia - Opel and Saab.

Holden says it will contact owners directly.  Here are the cars and model years affected:

Holden Astra-H (2005 - 2009), Opel Astra -J (2012 - 2013), Holden Astra-J (2014 - 2017), Holden Trax (2013 - 2018), Holden Barina (2012 - 2018), Holden Cruze (2010 - 2016), Holden Cascada (2015 - 2017), Opel Cascada (2014), Opel Mokka (2014), Opel Zafira (2013), SAAB 9-3 (2006 - 2011), SAAB 9-5 (2006 - 2011).
