Four Australians were injured in the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain in which a van was used to mow down people on the popular Las Ramblas pedestrian mall.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said one woman is in hospital in a serious condition while a second woman was in a stable condition.  Another woman is unaccounted for.  Two men from Victoria were treated in hospital and released.  Spanish officials said 13 people were killed and dozens were injured, and the so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms these brutal and cowardly attacks, and in the case of Las Ramblas clearly designed to harm and affect tourists who were visiting the area," said Ms. Bishop.

Other Australians were enjoying a sunny day in Barcelona when the attack happened.  Alana Reader was shopping with friends Julia Monaco and Julia Rocca - all from Melbourne - when all of a sudden people started screaming and running to get away from the van.  "I was thinking 'this guy could drive through the front windows and where would we run to if they jumped out with knives or guns?" she said, "All I wanted to do was crawl home and call my parents and my family."

Police arrested a man who allegedly rented the van used in the attack, identified as Driss Oukabir.  But they're still hunting the driver of the van, who managed to flee the scene.

Hours after the Barcelona attack, police shot and killed five terrorists who attempted a follow-up attack in the town of Cambrils, a popular seaside resort to the southwest of Barcelona.  The men were reportedly wearing suicide belts and inside a car that overturned as police engaged it.  Seven people including a cop were hurt in Cambrils, and one person is in a critical condition.
