The Australian Federal Police (AFP) are investigating allegations of war crimes committed by Australian troops serving in Afghanistan.

"In June 2018, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) received a referral to investigate allegations of war crimes committed by Australian soldiers during the Afghanistan conflict," read the statement from the AFP.  "The AFP has accepted the matters for investigation."

Because the investigation is ongoing, the AFP said it would not identify the soldiers, detail the allegations, not reveal the source of the referral.

"It is not appropriate for the AFP to provide further comment at this time."

It has been reported by Fairfax and News Corp that the investigation is including on Australia's most-celebrated soldier and Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith over his alleged actions while serving with a special forces patrol during Australia's longest war.
