The governor general had sacked Australian Border Force Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg after a nine-month disciplinary investigation determined he had behaved inappropriately with a younger female subordinate.

The primary issue was allegations Quaedvlieg helped get a job at Sydney Airport for a junior staff member with who he was in a relationship.  In a statement, the government says engaged in "acts and made omissions" which gave an unfair advantage to the young woman; made a "willfully or recklessly false statement" about the relationship status to conceal it from the immigration minister; and failed to disclose that he had an interest in the candidate securing the position.

The government listed several grounds for Quaedvlieg's dismissal, including failing to disclose a change in his relationship status, and modifying recruitment policies to advantage a candidate for recruitment.  Quaedvlieg has reportedly been off the job since 25 May.  The government in July confirmed that the Border Force head was on leave due to an investigation into the disciplinary matter.  He continued to collect his salary of $618,000 per year.
