Government - Granite State Newspaper Rejects Trump
For the first time in a century, a stalwart and somewhat influential Republican newspaper in New Hampshire is refusing to endorse the party's Presidential candidate, which in this year is Donald Trump.
Manchester, New Hampshire Union Leader publisher Joe McQuaid writes that the Libertarian Party ticket of Gary Johnson and William Weld, two former Republican governors, represent "bright light of hope and reason" in "today's dark times". He mentions that for the past 100 years, the paper has urged readers to vote for Republicans - even when they have to "hold their noses" such as in the case of Richard Nixon's re-election campaign in 1972. "No need to hold your nose" this time, McQuaid wrote.
McQuaid famously first aired out his utter disgust with the fascist demagogue last December, kicking off a feud on America's right-wing: "Trump has shown himself to be a crude blowhard with no clear political philosophy and no deeper understanding of the important and serious role of President of the United States than one of the goons he lets rough up protesters in his crowds," McQuaid wrote back then, comparing Trump to the bullying character Biff from the "Back to the Future" movies. Trump responded with a Twitter war. Nothing Trump has done in the months since then has improved his standing with the paper.
It should be noted that Trump's goons haven't changed either, in fact they appear to be even worse. A despicable, cowardly Trump supporter cold-cocked a 69-year old woman protesting one of Trump's rallies in North Carolina. Shirley Teeter was knocked down, falling on the oxygen tank she needs to breathe. Police are searching for the assailant.
Meanwhile, police in Florida arrested a man in the arson that gutted a mosque once attended by the gunman in the Pulse Nightclub massacre. Joseph Schreiber's social media page contains several endorsements of Trump for president.
The Union Leader is now the fifth conservative-leaning newspaper of note to withhold its endorsement from Trump. The Dallas Morning News and Houston Chronicle, both of Texas, are backing Hillary Clinton. The Winston-Salem Journal in North Carolina and the Richmond, Virginia Times-Dispatch are recommending the Libertarian party. Not one major newspaper anywhere in America has endorsed Trump.
The Libertarian Party in the US is a conservative movement; it opposes social spending on pensions and healthcare, favors laissez-faire economics, and generally supports decriminalization of drugs - commonly known as "Republicans with Bongs".
