The Greens hope to pressure the Federal Government to adopt a plan to tackle Australia's recycling crisis and prevent the industry's collapse.

"To be completely blunt, the shit is hitting the fan with recycling around this country," said Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who says the government needs to show leadership on the issue.  "We need to take action.  No more talkfest from the Federal Environment Minister, tomorrow's time to put up solutions, to put up funding."

Local, state and federal governments came up with a national waste plan more than a decade ago, but the Greens are finally coming up with ways to fund it.  This would have the government putting up $500 Million to go to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to mandate waste management.  It also involves enhanced technology and sorting processes at recycling plants.

"We actually need to look at how we make recycling sustainable in Australia, and that's going to take significant investment and some time," said Whish-Wilson.  "But if we get it right, then we will be self-sufficient, we will have a resilient recycling industry and create thousands of new jobs."
