Mark your calendars, the High Court on Friday afternoon will decide the fate of seven federal politicians whose dual citizenships might disqualify them from holding office.

Those facing the possibility of being kicked out of Parliament are: Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, deputy Nationals leader Fiona Nash, former Nationals minister Matt Canavan, South Australian senator Nick Xenophon, and One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts.  Former Greens senators Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters have already stood down.

Section 44(1) of the Australian Constitution bans foreign nationals from elected office.  All seven believed they were Australian citizens, but found out in adulthood that other countries might consider them citizens by descent through their parents.  Through their counsel, most of them claim they would never have known about their dual citizenship.  Malcolm Roberts, however, might face a more difficult path after describing farcical attempts to check on his status with the UK - including abortive attempts to send an email titled "Am I still a British Citizen" - at the very least suggesting that he thought there was a reason to check.
