Australian shoppers will be blocked from the online retailer Amazon's global sites including the US, when new rules on the good and services tax come into force on 1 July.

From that point, the American website and other overseas sites will no longer ship to Australian addresses.  Aussie shoppers will be automatically redirected to Amazon.com.au, which still features some 60 million products since its launch late last year.  That's a lot, but only a sliver of the 500 million items available from the US and international sites.

"While we regret any inconvenience this may cause customers, we have had to assess the workability of the legislation as a global business with multiple international sites," an Amazon spokeswoman said.

Beginning on 1 July, online retailers like Amazon will be required to apply the 10 percent GST to goods that are purchased international sites and shipped to Australia.  Local retailers such as Harvey Norman, Myer, JB Hi-Fi, and David Jones lobbied for the new collection requirement after years of declining sales because of online competition.

"A level playing field will help Australian businesses grow and create more jobs and opportunities," said a spokesperson for Treasurer Scott Morrison, who insists the new GST regulations "level the playing field" for Australian businesses.

"The Government doesn't apologise for ensuring multinationals pay a fair amount of tax here in Australia," the spokesperson added, "That tax revenue is used to fund essential services."
