Government - North Korea's Kim Allegedly Losing Grip
The most-senior level defector ever to bail out of North Korea says the country's current leader Kim Jong-un is losing his grip on power.
Thae Yong-ho is North Korea's former deputy ambassador to the UK. Last year, he defected and wound up in South Korea, where he has been giving interviews about the situation north of the 38th Parallel.
"When Kim Jong-un first came to power, I was hopeful that he would make reasonable and rational decisions to save North Korea from poverty, but I soon fell into despair watching him purging officials for no proper reasons," said Mr. Thae in a news conference in Seoul. "Low-level dissent or criticism of the regime, until recently unthinkable, is becoming more frequent," he added.
North Korea's elites are losing confidence in Kim. The country's economic and political system has degenerated and has "nothing to do with true communism", running instead on a black-markets and person-to-person trading. Large numbers of North Korea's diplomats around the world are waiting for a chance to defect as Mr. Thae did with his family last year. Mr. Thae believes that the North Korean people have had enough: "We have to spray gasoline on North Korea," he said, "and let the North Korean people set fire to it."
Although Thae claims that domestic strife is waiting just under the surface to burst through, the Kim regime is determined to hold on - and it has a plan to follow.
"Kim Jong-un knows that nuclear weapons are the only guarantee for his rule. And Kim Jong-un, I think, will press the button on these dangerous weapons when he thinks that his rule and his dynasty is threatened."
