Speaker Tony Smith told the House of Representatives today that he has set a date for the by-election in former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's constituency of Wentworth.

The election will take place on 20 October.  Mr. Turnbill's resignation from Parliament after losing the prime ministership was the catalyst for by-election.

Labor has chosen candidate Tim Murray to run to replace Turnbull, and he has already been campaigning.

The Liberal pre-selection will be held tomorrow night.  Andrew Bragg, who was widely considered the frontrunner for Liberal pre-selection, announced taht he is not contesting the election.  He said the party should pick a woman for the seat.
