Government - Whinging Trump Harangues Malcolm - These Are Allies?
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's first phone call with Donald Trump was shorter than expected and more contentious than either side had let on at first. It seems Trump is going to treat America's closest, most loyal allies the same way he treat his "enemies" on Twitter.
US officials briefed on the phone call told the Washington Post that the orange clown was obsessed with the agreement to resettle 1,250 refugees from the Manus Island and Nauru detention camps that Mr. Turnbull had reached with then-President Barack Obama in December. "This is the worst deal ever," Trump fumed as Turnbull tried to get a confirmation that the US would honor its commitments. Trump whinged that he was "going to get killed" politically and accused Turnbull of trying to send the "next Boston bombers" to the US. "I don't want these people," Trump said. The status of the refugee deal is in doubt.
The notoriously narcissistic Trump bragged about his electoral college victory in the November presidential election, and belittled the Australia Prime Minister by claiming their conversation was "was the worst call by far" of Trump's interactions with other world leaders - which included a chat with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House didn't say if Trump and Putin discussed the 37 Australian citizens and permanent residents who died in the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 by a Russian-made missile in eastern Ukraine.
Keep in mind that this was two allies talking: Australia and the United States routinely share intelligence as members of the Five Eyes; Australia sent troops and hardware to support the US in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. One would think allies this close would actually have "emphasized the enduring strength and closeness of the US-Australia relationship that is critical for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and globally," which was the original narrative of the call presented to the world media.
At least it wasn't as bad as Trump's conversation with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto last week, after which Pena Nieto called off his scheduled visit to the White House. The Associated Press reports that after the Mexican leader refused to pay for Trump's idiotic idea for a border wall, the vulgar New York City real estate developer threatened to send US troops into Mexico: "You have a bunch of bad hombres down there. You aren't doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn't, so I just might send them down to take care of it," Trump reportedly said.
The term "bad hombres" referred to drug cartels, and echoed comments Trump made during the 2016 election campaign about evicting Mexican criminals from the US.
