President Michelle Bachelet of Chile signed legislation to prohibit the sale of single-use plastic bags in 102 villages and towns along the country's Pacific Ocean coast.  It's the first such national law in the Americas.

"Our fish are dying from plastics ingestion or strangulation - it's a task in which everyone must collaborate," President Bachelet said in the beach resort city of Pichilemu.  The bill also encourages non-coastal regions to join in the program to restrict or eliminate plastic bags. 

Plastic bags are bad for fish

Chile goes through more than 3.4 billion plastic bags every year.  The Environment Ministry says 97 percent are improperly disposed of in landfills, are illegally dumped, or wind up in the Ocean.  To combat this, 50 of Chile's 345 municipal districts have already regulated plastic bag usage to some degree; these measures include banning shops from providing plastic bags, limiting the number of bags a customer can receive, or encouraging stores to switch to reusable bags.
