The Federal Government is adding the Whooping Cough Vaccine to the National Immunisation Schedule - meaning it will be free for all pregnant women from July.

The changes will be part of the Federal Budget to be unveiled on Tuesday.  The Turnbull government will earmark $39.5 Million to the vaccine to the national immunisation program, accompanied by a national education campaign.  Some states already offered it, but now it will go to all pregnant women in Australia.

"There are now no barriers and no excuses for not protecting yourself, your family and the rest of the community," said Health Minister Greg Hunt over the weekend, "I know what a devastating impact this disease can have on families and beautiful young children like Dana McCaffery and Riley Hughes."

The families of the two children have been campaigning for the changes.  David and Toni McCaffery lost their four-week-old daughter Dana in 2009, while Catherine and Greg Hughes' son Riley died of whooping cough in 2015.
