A man has been killed by a crocodile at Cahill's Crossing on the East Alligator River, near Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory.

The 47-year-old man is believed to have been from the remote community of Gunbalanya.  Police say he and two women were wading across the notorious crossing when he was taken by the 3.5 meter reptile.  The two women made it across the river before realising the man was missing.  The victim's body was found two kilometers downstream, along with the croc, which was shot and killed.

Police are urging people not to attempt to wade in croc-infested waters.  "Cahill's Crossing is notorious for crocodiles and to walk across it to me is just foolishness," NT Police Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison said.  "You are tempting fate, knowing the size of the crocodiles in that area."

The last croc attack at that location was in 1987.  In that case, a 40-year-old man was decapitated by a large crocodile while he waded in the water fishing.
