The Melbourne native-turned-Mossad agent who died in an Israeli prison allegedly leaked sensitive information to Hezbollah.  That’s according to an exposé in the German news magazine Der Spiegel.

The report says that while he was working for Israel’s spy agency Mossad, Zygier gave up the names of two informants in Lebanon.  Hezbollah arrested those two men and sentenced them to prison.

Israel has not been forthcoming with details as to why Ben Zygier was subject to a secret trial and imprisoned under an alias so classified that even his jailers only knew him by the codename “Prisoner X”.

Zygier died in his prison cell that was supposed to be under strict surveillance.  An Israeli investigation found he hanged himself with a bed sheet.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has ordered an investigation.
