Snapchat is ending its Snapcash peer-to-peer payment service on 30 August after less than four years, abandoning the space to Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and others.

This means the partnership with Square, creator of Square Cash, is pretty much over.

Rather then being used for restaurant and bar orders, ride-hailing, or just paying back friends for whatever, Snapcash seemed to have fallen into the creepier corners of the Internet.  The tech website TechCrunch did a Twitter search for "Snapcash" and was treated to a barrage of sleazy offers of adult content in exchange for Snapcash payments.  Dumping the service would mean dumping any bad publicity that might result.

A Snapchat spokesperson said, "Yes, we're discontinuing the Snapcash feature as of 30 August 2018.  Snapcash was our first product created in partnership with another company - Square.  We're thankful for all the Snapchatters who used Snapcash for the last four years and for Square's partnership!"

The company hadn't actually announced the end of Snapcash before reports of its death started circulating.  A TechCrunch reader and Snapchar user discovered some code buried in the Android app that displays the line "Snapcash will no longer be available after %s [date]".
