73-year old Walter Unbehaun wasn’t making it away from the only home he’s known for the majority of his adult life.  So he robbed a bank in a suburb of Chicago, in hopes of being sent back to prison.  Looks like he’ll get his wish.

Unbehaun is no saint.  His life has been spent mostly inside American prisons for felonies.  His most recent stint was a 10-year term for bank robbery, and he got out a couple of years ago.  But he could not adjust to life on the outside.

Police say Unbehaun walked into a bank branch in Niles, Illinois and showed the tellers a silver revolver, telling them he had only six months to live and had nothing left to lose.  He made no effort to disguise himself.  Unbehaun left the bank on his cane with more than $4,100 in his pocket, knowing that authorities would have no problem finding him.  They didn’t.  He threw down his cane and surrendered as soon as cops knocked on the door of his motel room.

If convicted, Walter Unbehaun could be sentenced to 20-years in prison.
