Italy now says it has gotten reassurances that India will respect the human rights of two Marines accused of killing fishers on a failed anti-piracy mission:  The men will be returned to Delhi for trial.

The Indian government had allowed them to return to Italy for Christmas, and they men returned to India.  Delhi again allowed them to go home to vote in last month's election.

But the second time, Rome decided that because the shooting of fisher happened in international waters, India had no jurisdiction, and the men stayed in Italy.

That enraged the families of the fishers, who were backed by the Indian media.  India’s Supreme Court, feeling the pressure, ruled that Italy’s ambassador was barred from leaving the country.

The Italian marines were on anti-pirate duty aboard a cargo ship off India's coast in February last year when the fishermen, aboard an Indian fishing boat, were killed.
