The Australian government is sending condolences to the families of Indonesian soldiers killed by Papuan rebels.  Ambassador Greg Moriarty says the fighting is no good for the people of Papua or West Papua.

Two different rebel groups are thought to be responsible for the killings of eight Indonesian troops.

A gunman in the Puncak Jaya region killed one.  A separate attack claimed 7 troops at the Sinak Military Resort Command.

Rebels opened fire on a military helicopter attempting to collect the bodies, that mission had to be aborted.
