The next time you see an Australia Post truck in Sydney's CBD, you might not see any smoke coming out of the back of it.  That's because the carrier is the first in the country to trial the world's first factory manufactured electric truck.

The Fuso eCanter is expected to hit the streets within the next few weeks.  It's also being tested out in Tokyo, New York, and London.

It's AusPost's latest step in making its operations efficient and sustainable, especially through the use of electric vehicles.

"We currently have over 2200 electric vehicles on the road around Australia - with an additional 1000 on order making us the nation's largest electric vehicle fleet operator," said Australia Post's GM of Transport and Aviation James Dixon.  "While these are primarily smaller last-mile delivery vehicles such as bikes and trikes used by posties, we've trialled electric vans in our operations before, too.  We're excited to see how the eCanter performs in Australian conditions."

Fuso's eCanter is powered by a 115kW/390Nm electric motor and uses six battery packs that can be charged to 80 percent capacity in less one hour with a Type 2 charger.
